Fall Plumbing Maintenance Tips
Fall has finally arrived in Houston, Texas and although zing weather is probably a couple of months off, it isn’t too early to think about what you need to do before winter arrives. Chilly fall temperatures serve as a polite reminder that when winter arrives it can be sudden, often leaving homeowners unprepared for the troubles associated with extreme cold. A few simple plumbing preparations now will help prevent headaches and costly repairs throughout the winter months.
- Make sure outside faucets aren’t running or leaking. Make any necessary repairs or call us before zing temperatures arrive. When pipes ze, pressure builds causing the pipes to crack and break.
- Disconnect outside hoses. If hoses are left connected to the faucet, water inside of the hoses can ze and expand to the faucet, causing interior pipes to break.
- Your water heater receives more work in the colder months. Flush the water heater removing any sediment build up, which causes corrosion and shortens the life of your water heater. If you need a water heater repair or installation, we can help.
- Check the temperature setting on your water heater’s thermostat. Set at 120°F for optimum performance.
- Clear leaves and debris from outside gutters and downspouts to ensure easy drainage when water zes and thaws throughout the winter season.
- When leaving home for extended periods, shut off the main water valve and drain the system by opening faucets at the highest and lowest points of the house. Make sure the heat is left on and set no lower than 55°F.
