Can Pumpkins Harm Your Plumbing?

With just a couple of days left until Halloween, you may be making plans to go pumpkin picking so that you can bring a few home to use for fall décor, as well as one or two that can be used for carving. At Daniels Plumbing we have some friendly advice for you: Do not put your pumpkin seeds down your drain! If you have a garbage disposal at home, you may be inclined to just toss all of your pumpkin’s remains into it, but be warned – sending any part of your pumpkin(s) down the garbage disposal can result in a plumbing disaster. To avoid a Halloween emergency, all pumpkin guts and seeds should be thrown into your trash can – not down the garbage disposal, not down your kitchen sink’s drain, and certainly not down your toilet either.

The pumpkin innards or “guts” are slimy, gooey fibers that can cause damage to your garbage disposal and sink drains. In your sink, the fibers from the pumpkin can dry and harden causing a clog in your drain or an unpleasant odor. Additionally, damage can also be caused to your garbage disposal if the fibers become wrapped around the blades. Seeds can also contribute to a drain clog or cause damage to your disposal blades.
