August is National Water Quality Month

August is National Water Quality Month, a time to reflect on our water resources and re-dedicate ourselves to their protection and restoration. If there’s one thing we all love, it’s the water. Whether you’re out on your boat, taking a shower, drinking from a water bottle, or watering your plants, water plays a vital role in our lives and we certainly would be in trouble without access to this necessary resource.

Every August many people all over the world celebrate National Water Quality month, and we think this is a great opportunity to provide important tips to improve the quality of our water!

  • Avoid using pesticides and chemical fertilizers.   Especially during a heavy rainfall, the chemicals will absorb into the ground.
  • Clean up after your pets. This is not only a courtesy to your neighbors and community, but it also can help with water quality.  When it rains and pet waste isn’t taken care of, it can enter the storm drains and could potentially enter waterways such as rivers or lakes.
  • Watch what you flush down your toilet.  To avoid clogs and backups, we recommend only flushing toilet paper and human waste.  For water quality purposes, do not flush old medication—this could affect water quality.
  • Shorten showers.  Shortening your shower by two minutes each day can save five gallons of water – that’s 35 gallons in a week.

The best thing to remember about water quality is that almost anything can affect it. From your personal wastewater to pet waste, from harsh chemicals to medication – when these things find their way into the water source, they can significantly impact water quality. Do your part to protect the water and encourage others to do their part, too.
