Preparing Your Plumbing For Spring!
The days are growing longer and it’s time to start prepping for spring. For homeowners, preparation should start with the plumbing system.
Inspect the pipes
Check the water pipes throughout your home, including in the bathroom and kitchen. Cold temperatures could have caused cracked pipes, so check for mold or damp areas near the pipes. Any unusual stains on the wall may indicate a water leak within the walls and should be checked immediately. Replacing small leaks will be cheaper than waiting and repairing water damage.
Test your sump pump
Sump pumps keep your basement dry by draining the water that enters below the basement. April brings rain showers, so it is critical to test your sump pump and make sure it is ready for the first rainy day. Test your sump pump by pouring water into the sump pit. The pump should turn on, drain all the water, and then shut off. A sump pump that is not functioning correctly can cause expensive water damage in the future. For extra protection, a water-powered backup will allow your sump pump to kick in, even during a power outage.
Outdoor plumbing
Check the plumbing outside of your home for any leaks or cracks that may have developed over the winter. (Hopefully you detached any hoses during the winter months, as they have a high probability of zing.) Turn on the outdoor faucets without a hose, and watch for any leaks. Listen to the water pressure coming out of the faucet. Having air in the line for a few minutes may be normal after being turned off all winter, but it should eventually have regular pressure. Low water pressure could indicate a broken pipe, and you should call a professional.
Yard cleanup
Clear your yard and gutters of any trash, debris and leaves that are leftover from the winter. Ice is beginning to melt, and clogged gutters can cause flooding, water damage or leaks.
While it doesn’t happen often, it is important to take your spring plumbing inspection seriously. Plumbing issues that are left unattended can quickly turn into a much bigger problem.
